How to calculate square footage

Multiply length by width for a rectangle. For a triangle, multiply the base by the perpendicular height and divide by two. Add non-overlapping areas and subtract cutouts.

A 10 × 12 ft rectangle with a 2 × 3 ft cutout has 114 sq ft of usable area.

Calculate square footage for an irregular area

Sketch the outline and split it into non-overlapping rectangles and triangles. A triangle’s height is measured perpendicular to its base. Add each section once, then subtract any cutout that was included in the original outline. A 12 × 10 ft patio with an attached triangle measuring 6 ft by 4 ft has 132 sq ft. Subtract a 2 × 3 ft planter to get 126 sq ft.

Convert inches and square yards to square feet

Convert inches to feet before multiplying dimensions. For example, 10 ft 6 in is 10.5 ft. A 10.5 × 8 ft rectangle is 84 sq ft. If you already know the area in square yards, multiply by 9 and enter the result as a known area.

When to send your area to the Gravel Calculator

Transfer the net square footage when the whole area uses the same gravel depth. If an apron or another section has a different depth, enter those sections separately in the Gravel Calculator so each depth is applied to the right area.
