How many bags of mulch do I need?
Multiply square feet by depth in inches and divide by 12. Divide that volume by the bag size and round up. A 100 sq ft bed at 3 inches needs 25 ft³, about 0.93 yd³ or 13 two-cubic-foot bags.
Mulch calculator example for two garden beds
A 12 × 5 ft bed and an 8 × 5 ft bed add up to 100 sq ft. At a chosen depth of 3 inches, their combined volume is 25 ft³. That is about 0.93 cubic yards or 13 bags if each bag contains 2 ft³. If you are topping up existing mulch, enter the additional depth you intend to add.
Compare bagged mulch with bulk delivery
Using example prices, 13 bags at $4 cost $52. At $36 per cubic yard plus $25 delivery, 0.93 cubic yards costs about $58.33 before any supplier rounding. If the supplier bills in whole yards, the comparable bulk total becomes $61. Confirm the minimum, billing increment and delivery fee before choosing.
How much area does one bag of mulch cover?
Multiply the bag volume in cubic feet by 12 and divide by your chosen depth in inches. A 2 ft³ bag covers 8 sq ft at 3 inches. For several beds at different depths, estimate each separately, add the cubic feet, then round up to whole bags once.
